Feeling really alone. Saw one of my few friends left in my home city today, but it’s sad when you can’t get too close because they’re an ex and your girlfriend doesn’t like him. There may not be any residual feelings (on my end, at least), but I still need a friend when my girlfriend is traipsing across the country and I’m here, sad, missing Smith, wanting her to be checking up on me because I have no distractions and this is my first summer away and she’s done it before, while simultaneously wanting her to have fun because I love her. I’m so glad I’m in love, but sometimes, it really fucking sucks. I’m gonna go cry now, for the approximate 14th time since being back.

Is your house at Smith in the Green Street area? What are the Green Street dorms like? I'm a prospective student and I think they seem great, but I've heard the stereotype Green Street residents are more "quiet" and "bookish" than in other dorms. Do you find that to be true? Thank you!

I actually live across campus in the Quad, what is known to be the opposite of Green Street, both locationally and personality-wise.

Green Street houses are certainly beautiful (although there are a lot of double rooms), and in a really convenient part of campus, but from my experience they do tend to attract “quiet”/”bookish” people. Depending on the house, Green Street is known for being more studious (being surrounded by science buildings), but that’s not to say there isn’t a little of everything; all houses tend to have a mix, but perhaps Green Street most of all. Some people choose it because it’s near a. athletics, b. much of the performing arts, and c. science; people tend to choose their houses based on what they want to be near. The Quad, for example, is great if you want to be near parties and don’t mind walking a bit farther to get to academics. It’s all a tradeoff!

Is there a certain type of house community you’re looking for?

Easter is my favourite holiday and this is my first away from my mum, so my girlfriend hid eggs with candies and sweet notes all over my room (and in the right-hand corner you can see where the camera cut out my favourite kind of orange-chocolate!)

I am going to attend Amherst college (which I think is like a 50 minute ptva ride from smith?) this fall. The impression I get is that the queer scene there is umm.... lacking. However, I know that there are a good amount of queer people in the consortium at large, especially in terms of women. Do you think that if I went to Amherst I could easily utilize the consortium to meet other queer people or are the social groups too divided?

While I can’t really speak to the Amherst queer scene specifically (although your future school is holding Queer Prom this Saturday, for the record!), you’re definitely correct about the consortium as a whole. My feeling about the 5-College connection is that you can make it work however you want it to; for me, I rarely go off campus, but I know people who do all the time. I’ll be honest, in terms of Smithies, I believe it’s often straight women going to neighbor schools, but that just proves it can be done and I’m sure if, for example, you were to visit Smith, you’d get a lot of girls chasing after you. After all, it’s nice to date off-campus; it gives you autonomy and an escape from on-campus dyke-drama, particularly at the many small schools (such as Smith)!

If I had to guess, I’d say that I won’t pretend it won’t be some effort, but I’d also say if you try, you’ll definitely succeed at getting into queer communities.
If you plug yourself into the queer scene at Amherst, however small (or not, you never know!), I think you’ll have that group as a connection to queers at other colleges. Or alternatively, if you take classes within the Consortium, you’ll make friends who go to other schools directly and you can go from there :)

Hi, I was wondering if I could ask you a question about Smith College. I was accepted ED & the Smith website says they inform about merit scholarships at the time of acceptance. But does that mean MY acceptance or everyone's acceptance? I feel like they would want to know the whole class before they decide merit scholarships, so they would want to wait for the RD acceptances. Or do ED students just never get merit scholarships?

Hello there! I’m so sorry I didn’t see this earlier; I’m not sure when this was submitted, but it never flagged me.

Smith rarely does merit scholarships, and from my recollection, they’re generally for people in the area. Did you have one in mind specifically? That said/asked, I can’t tell you if ED students ever get them (you’d have to ask the Admissions Office), but I have a friend who got a special one (made just for her) that ended up screwing up the time at which and the manner in which she received her acceptance. So, it may not be as precise as it’s presented.

Hopefully that helps, and best of luck! I know affording college can be difficult, but remember, if cost is an issue and you applied for financial aid, you can always appeal your package. And if you’re still curious about merit, don’t hesitate to contact Admissions; they’re very helpful.
